Why isn't your restoration company getting leads from Google?

Most restoration companies that get few calls from Google have one of seven problems. The two that usually cost the most calls are the Google Business Profile category and a missing map pack spot, and each of the seven can be checked in about ten minutes.

How do you tell where the leads are leaking?

Start with the search your customers actually type. On your phone, search water damage restoration plus your city, then water damage repair plus your city. Write down the three companies in the map pack, their review counts and whether Local Services Ads show above them. That one search tells you which of the seven problems below to check first.

1. Is your Google Business Profile in the wrong category?

The primary category is one of the strongest signals Google uses to match a profile to a search. Many restoration companies are listed under Carpet cleaning service, General contractor or Contractor, because that is how they started.

How to check: open your profile manager and look at the primary category. For water damage work it should be Water damage restoration service. Fire and mold categories can be secondary if you do that work.

2. Are you invisible outside a two-mile circle?

Google weighs distance between the searcher and the business. Most companies rank well near the shop and drop off a few miles out, which is exactly where many of their jobs are.

How to check: run a grid scan, or search from your phone on your next job in a town you serve. If you are in the top three at the shop and missing in every other town, the fix is service-area pages, reviews that mention those towns, and citations, not a new profile.

What you see What it usually means
Top three near the shop, gone two miles out Normal distance falloff, needs service-area pages and reviews
Not in the top three anywhere Category, reviews or profile completeness problem
Ranked last month, gone this month Suspension, a profile edit, or a new competitor
Map pack shows, but LSA ads sit above it You need Local Services Ads to be seen first

3. Does your website have one page for everything?

A homeowner searching flooded basement cleanup wants a page about flooded basements. If your site lists every service in one paragraph, Google has nothing specific to rank, and the visitor has nothing specific to read.

How to check: count the pages on your site. If there is no separate page for water damage restoration, burst pipes, flooded basements and sewage backup, that is the gap.

4. Can a visitor call you without scrolling?

Open your site on your phone. If the phone number is not visible without scrolling, or it is not a tappable link, you are losing calls from people who already found you.

How to check: look for a fixed call button at the bottom of the mobile screen. Then tap it and make sure it dials the right number.

5. When did you last get a Google review?

Recent reviews matter to Google and to the homeowner choosing between three names. A profile with 80 reviews, the latest from eight months ago, looks less active than one with 40 reviews and three from this week.

How to check: sort your reviews by newest. If the latest is more than a month old, start a review text after every job. No incentives and no asking only the happy customers.

6. Does anyone answer at 2 a.m.?

Water damage does not wait for office hours, and neither do the callers. A call that rings out goes to the next name on the map.

How to check: call your own number at night from a phone that is not saved in your contacts. If it goes to voicemail, that is lost work every week. An answering service or an after-hours receptionist fixes it.

7. Are you tracking calls at all?

Without call tracking, you cannot tell whether calls dropped or just moved to a different source. Many owners think Google stopped working when the real problem was a forwarding change or a new receptionist.

How to check: do you know how many calls came from Google Maps last month? If not, add a tracking number to your profile and website, with recording.

What should you fix first?

Fix in this order, because each one depends on the one before it:

  1. Answer the phone at all hours.
  2. Set the right primary category and complete the profile.
  3. Put a tappable phone number on every mobile screen.
  4. Build a page per damage type.
  5. Start the review text after every job.
  6. Add call tracking.
  7. Add service-area pages where the grid shows you fading.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my restoration company show on Google Maps but get no calls?
Usually because you rank close to your shop and nowhere else, or because a competitor with more recent reviews and better photos gets the tap. Check your ranking from several points across your service area, not just your office.
How do I check my Google Maps ranking from another town?
Use a grid scan tool, which checks rankings from many points at once. For a quick free check, search on your phone while you are on a job in that town, or set the location in Google's search settings.
Does my website affect my Google Maps ranking?
Yes, indirectly. Google uses your website to judge how relevant your business is to a search. A site with a page for each damage type and your service towns supports the profile. A one-page site gives it very little to work with.
Why did my calls drop when my rankings stayed the same?
Check the phone first. Missed calls after hours, a forwarding change or a call tracking number that stopped working all look like a lead drop. Then check whether Local Services Ads appeared above the map in your city.
How fast can I fix a low call volume?
Profile and website fixes can be done in one to two weeks. Rankings take longer to respond, often one to three months. Local Services Ads are the fastest way to add calls while the rest catches up.
