Answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO) make your pages retrievable, quotable and trusted by AI answer engines. We build the content, the structure and the off-site mentions that get a brand cited in AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot, and we measure it per engine. Nobody can promise a recommendation; we can make you the most citable option.

## What is AI search visibility?

AI search visibility is how often, and how favourably, your brand appears inside AI-generated answers: Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Gemini. These engines do not return ten links. They retrieve passages from the indexed web, pick a handful to trust, and write an answer that cites them. Being the cited source is the new first position.

Two names describe the work. **Answer engine optimization (AEO)** shapes your content so a passage can be lifted whole as the answer. **Generative engine optimization (GEO)** builds the evidence and the mentions that make a model select you when it synthesizes. We treat them as one practice layered on the [SEO](/services/seo/) foundation.

## How do AI engines decide what to cite?

They retrieve, then rank, then cite. A single long question is expanded into several sub-queries (Google calls this query fan-out); each sub-query retrieves candidate passages; a re-ranker drops most of them; the model writes an answer and attaches a few citations. Google states plainly in its [AI features guidance](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) that there is no special AI optimization beyond the fundamentals, and that a page must be indexed and snippet-eligible to appear.

What the retrieval step rewards is consistent across engines: a direct answer near the top of the page, question-shaped headings that match how people ask, dense facts with sources, clean heading hierarchy, fast server-rendered HTML, and a brand that is mentioned on other sites the engine already trusts. What it punishes is also consistent: keyword stuffing, content hidden behind JavaScript, and pages that take a thousand words to get to the point.

## What do we actually do?

The engagement has four parts, in this order.

1. **Eligibility and crawl layer.** Confirm every priority page is indexed and snippet-eligible. Split robots.txt by bot job so search and user-fetch bots (OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot, Google's crawlers) are allowed, per [OpenAI's](https://platform.openai.com/docs/bots) and [Perplexity's](https://docs.perplexity.ai/guides/bots) published bot documentation. Ship a Markdown twin of every page, an llms.txt index, and Content-Signal headers. Get indexed in Bing and push changes with [IndexNow](https://www.indexnow.org/), because ChatGPT search draws on Bing's index.
2. **Answer architecture.** Rewrite priority pages so each section opens with a 40 to 60 word answer under a question-shaped heading, with roughly 150 words between headings, specific numbers, named entities, and a source link on every claim. Comparison tables where the intent is commercial. A visible FAQ written to be quoted, with matching FAQ markup.
3. **Fan-out coverage.** Map the sub-questions behind each buyer question (cost, comparison, legitimacy, timeline, alternatives) and make sure a page answers each one. Most sites only cover the head term and miss the sub-queries that actually get cited.
4. **Off-site mentions.** Brand mentions on trusted third-party pages correlate with AI visibility far more strongly than backlinks do. We run [digital PR](/services/content-and-authority/) for mentions in trade press, YouTube, Reddit and review platforms, and we anchor your entity in Wikidata and your structured data so every mention resolves to the same organization.

## How is it measured?

Rank tracking does not predict AI citations, so we track citations directly. A locked library of 25 to 50 prompts, weighted toward category, comparison and use-case questions, is run three to five times per engine (because answers vary) on a weekly or monthly schedule. Each run is scored for mention, citation, position and sentiment.

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are reported as separate lines. They reach the same conclusion most of the time but cite different sources most of the time, so a blended "AI visibility" score hides which one is working. In GA4 we add a channel group for AI referrers (chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and the rest), since those sessions otherwise land in Direct.

## What we tell every client before starting

- AI referral traffic is still small in volume. It converts well, but it is a quality play, not a volume play.
- Citations swing month to month. We look at trends over quarters, not weekly snapshots.
- Nothing here replaces being a good answer. If the content is thin, we fix the content first, which is [content and authority](/services/content-and-authority/) work.
- Hidden text, prompt injection and cloaking are explicitly against Google's [spam policies](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/essentials/spam-policies). We do not do them and we will not run alongside anyone who does.

## Who this is for

Brands in categories where buyers now ask an AI for a shortlist: software and SaaS, professional services, considered consumer purchases, and local services where "best [service] near me" increasingly returns an AI summary above the map. If your competitors are being named and you are not, this is where to start. Read the working note on [what AI search visibility is and how to measure it](/insights/what-is-ai-search-visibility/).

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the difference between AEO, GEO and SEO?

SEO gets you into the index the AI engines read from. AEO makes your passages extractable as direct answers, for featured snippets, People Also Ask and AI summaries. GEO makes the generative model choose and cite you when it writes an answer. In practice they are one job with three measurements.

### Can you get our brand recommended by ChatGPT?

We can make your brand the most citable, consistent and well-mentioned option for the questions buyers ask, and we can track how often each engine cites you. We cannot promise a recommendation; the engines are non-deterministic and change often.

### Does structured data help AI visibility?

For Google's own AI features, yes: schema feeds entity understanding and feature eligibility. Third-party engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity read visible text, not JSON-LD, so every fact you want cited must be in the body copy. We do both and never rely on markup alone.

### Should we block AI crawlers?

Block the search and user-fetch bots and you disappear from AI answers and the referrals they send. Blocking training-only bots is a policy choice that barely affects citations. We split robots rules by the job each bot does, and we keep the list current.

### How do you measure AI search visibility?

A fixed library of 25 to 50 buyer prompts, run several times per engine on a schedule, scored for whether you are mentioned, whether you are cited, in what position and with what sentiment. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are tracked separately because they rarely cite the same sources.

### Does llms.txt matter?

Not for citations. No major AI search engine is documented as reading it. We still generate it because it costs nothing and some coding agents fetch it, but the real wins are a per-page Markdown twin, question-shaped headings, answer-first paragraphs and off-site mentions.
